What are Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs)?

Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs) work as supportive personnel under the supervision of a Speech-Language-Pathologist (SLP). Like SLPs, CDAs also possess a number of different job titles, including Speech Therapy Assistants, and Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs). The Communicative Disorders Assistants at Anderson Speech Consultants possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Speech and Language Sciences or Linguistics), a certification in a Communicative Disorders Assistant program, and have extensive volunteer experience within the field. As CDA’s are supervised by SLPs they are found working with a wide range of clientele (children and adults) in and out of our office.

Although CDA responsibilities differ in regards to which field they are working in, their primary goal is to assist the SLP in various day-to-day tasks, including:

  • Assisting in the delivery of therapy based on goals determined by the SLP
  • Creating materials and activities used to target speech and language goals
  • Interact with both the client as well as caregivers and provide strategies for practice at home or at school
  • Program and provide instruction on low tech Communication devices
  • Documenting patient progress and reporting information to the SLP
