What are Articulation Delays?
Articulation (Pronunciation) delays occur when speech sound errors continue past a certain age. Many sounds develop within different age ranges, and concerns may arise when they are not acquired. Speech sound disorders include problems with articulation (making sounds) and phonological processes (sound patterns).
When children are not easily understood by others because of their difficulty producing speech sounds, they may have an articulation delay or disorder. Children may have issues with one sound or a range of sounds. Common articulation errors include: “tat” for “cat” and “tar” for “star”. Articulation delays can impact language learning, literacy skills, intelligibility (ability to be understood) and social relationships.
Our services cater to the needs of the child and their family. As a result, sessions range in length, frequency, and duration. Sessions are tailored to your child’s age and interests. They also include a strong parental training component. We pride ourselves on providing fun, engaging sessions.
Children’s Oral Motor Disorder Therapy
Oral motor disorders or apraxia of speech is defined as a “breakdown” in the message from the brain to the mechanisms of speech (e.g., lips, tongue, vocal cords, jaw) when making specific sounds. This “breakdown” results in sounds being inconsistent or imprecise which may lead to speech that is difficult to understand. This can be frustrating for individuals with this difficulty; they know exactly what they want to say, but their motor systems cannot produce sounds accurately.
A number of specialized therapy techniques including PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) and Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol are used in treatment. Treatment can take place in-office or via Telepractice/Virtual Care.
