Five Apps to Help Your Child with their Speech and Language Goals
Have you wondered what you can be doing at home to improve your child’s speech-language skills? Over the years, apps have become a useful tool in speech therapy. Not only are apps fun and interactive for children but they reinforce techniques taught by speech therapists. Apps provide an easy solution for parents, to work with their child and keep them engaged! We’ve listed 5 of our current favourite apps below:
Articulation Station
Cost: $84.99 for the Pro version, Free Version only includes /p/ sound but other sounds can be purchased additionally for $5.49
Our favourite articulation resource app! This apps includes 60 target words per sound in different word positions. It offers practice at the word, phrase, sentence and story level so your child can move up as they make progress. Additionally, it has 6 engaging activities, such as matching games, rotating sentences and silly stories.
Lively Letters ™
Cost: $20.99
Lively Letters ™ is a research-based, multi-sensory reading program that we at Anderson Therapy Services, like to incorporate into our therapy sessions and summer camps! This app makes it easy to practice critical literacy skills such as phonemic awareness (letter-sounds) and phonics by using strategies such as memory tricks, helpful cues and amusing stories.
Touch Chat HD

This AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app is a symbol-based communication system ideal for users that are nonverbal, have low verbal skills or wish to improve expressive language. We like this app because you are able to navigate through customizable page sets that are specific to your child. Touch Chat –AAC and Touch Chat –AAC w/ WordPower are comparable to Proloquo2go. They have a voice synthesizer with audio playback, among other amazing features that aid communication.
Turtle Talk
Cost: $9.99
A great app that was created to help children who stutter. The app includes fun visual cues that may be used as a pacing board to slow down the rate of speech and help with phonological processing errors.
Describe It to Me
Cost: $14.99
Another fun app with games that help to improve your child’s expressive and receptivelanguage skills. We like this app for its game-show atmosphere that also allows children to increase their semantic knowledge, such as categorization.
Apps make a great supplemental tool to use in conjunction with speech therapy. They provide opportunities to target goals set out by the Speech-Language Pathologist and help carry-over those goals at home. If you have any questions relating to speech-language therapy, please
